Job Type:                     Temporary Staffing

Assignment Dates:     10/28/19 – 7/31/2020

Work Hours/Days:     Variable schedule, Mon-Fri 8am-5pm (10-15 hours/week)

Work Sites:                 Pleasanton, TX and surrounding communities (within 30 miles)

Specific Duties:

• Follows study protocol as defined by the Principal Investigator, Program Director or Research Staff
• Administers surveys and conducts other assessments with study participants in a community setting, both indoors and outdoors
• With general oversight from the Principal Investigator, works closely with and reports to the Research Coordinators to implement study protocol
• Record participant measurements and organize and maintain study participants records
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Able and willing to travel to various community settings
• Ability to occasionally lift study equipment or supplies, up to 25 pounds
• Strong skills in both written and oral communication

Qualifications:

• 18+ years of age with valid Texas drivers license
• Required Licenses/Certifications Required: CITI – Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Training to be provided to Research team)
• Computer Programs: Microsoft Office Suite including MS Word, Outlook and Excel
• Computer Experience: Intermediate level
• Must have current immunizations including annual flu shot , annual TB Skin test (PPD), MMR, Varicella-zoster, TDAP and Hep B series

Faculty at Northwest Vista College Community Health Worker Program hosted a Meet and Greet for students, both online and face-to-face Community Health Worker classes. Students enjoyed getting to meet other classmates, asked questions about internship options, degree plans and employment.

As a result of this meet and greet, community health worker students formed a planning committee to organize and execute a wellness and safety community event. Planning is underway and students will be looking at engaging other community partners and fellow CHWs to promote and get the word out to the community.

Duties:

o   Deliver and facilitate 160 hour CHW certification course

o   Implement effective classroom management techniques

o   Assess student learning objectives through classwork/homework, quizzes, and project-based assignments

o   Meet regularly with coordinator to assess the progress of each participant

o   Review instructional content, methods, and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses and develop recommendations for course revision and development 

o   Participate in sessions to generate ideas for program improvements and attend staff meetings

o   Performs related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

o   Current Texas Community Health Worker Instructor certification

o   Two to four years’ experience in teaching diverse student populations

o   Experience in the integration of technology in the classroom and using technology-based instruction to enhance student performance

o   Strong knowledge of communicative teaching practices

o   Ability to motivate students and communicate effectively

o   Ability to effectively document student progress and make instructional decisions based on this data

o   Flexibility in dealing with curricular changes to master objectives

o   Must be responsible, creative, motivated, patient, and friendly

o   Ability to mentor students to help them achieve academic and on-the-job success

We had a very successful Thanksgiving Volunteer Day on November 27th thanks to the participation and kindness of those in attendance. And, we have another opportunity for you.

If you are available next Saturday, December 14th., we ask you to join us. We’ll be providing support to VetStrong, a local non-profit organization, during their second annual Operation Cold Front. At this event, VetStrong will be issuing cold-weather gear (blankets, jackets…) to veterans and their depends and to the general public.

Volunteers are needed. You’re welcome to come by and volunteer for an hour or two.

As CHWs we are advocates for change and transformative change can only occur when we advocate for the vulnerable populations to improve their lives.  Education is key and the AlamoPromise can be the vehicle we can use to move our at-risk communities to better lives in the future.
Early next year you will be invited to attend a training session at the WETC to become “Ambassadors” for AlamoPromise.  Our goal is to inform and encourage family members, guardians, and relatives of graduating HS seniors in 2020 who do not have any plans or intentions of earning any additional educational skills after HS.

We want to use our relationships with these family members and friends to encourage them to involve their HS senior in the AlamoPromise to gain workplace certifications in over 80 different areas or an Associate Degree.  The “Ambassador” training will also include an orientation to FAFSA which can be an obstacle for some families in completing the application.
As part of this initiative, Alamo Colleges is hosting a “Cafe con Leche” to acquaint parents/family/friends about opportunities including AlamoPromise, Dual Credit, Student Support Services and more.
On December 12th from 9:00 AM to Noon at 2222 N. Alamo, the Alamo College’s new district headquarters the first “Cafe con Leche” ( flyerhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1qeKG7tvNXYYZ6QfCtWa7Og1IyiPOxY8x/view?usp=sharing) and I strongly encourage you to get the parents and family members of graduating HS seniors next Spring to attend, especially those families who have no experience with college opportunities. As alumni, join them in the event to make them feel more welcome.

Over 45% of all HS seniors in San Antonio never earn any additional educational certificates or degrees.  This is perhaps the single biggest social dimension that prevents individuals from a more positive future and fulfilling lives.
Each of us has a responsibility to reach out and help the changes necessary to improve our communities.

Volunteers will assist in the distribution of food which will be provided by the San Antonio Food Bank.

#CommunityHealthWorker enrollment for #Spring2020 is around the corner, November 11, 2019. The #CHW Program at #NorthwestVistaCollege offers great flexibility to allow students to complete their Level 1 #DSHS Certificate and/or Associates of Applied Science in Community Health. Fully online and face-to-face courses will be offered for Flex I and Flex II in the upcoming semester. Face-to-Face courses will be offered at two locations, Eastside Education and Training Center – EETC and Westside Education and Training Center.
